In which I embarrassed myself at Sinners

+ also felt god or whatever it is I've always called 'god'

I've always loved movie posters. No surprise at all that Sinners is inspiring some of the coolest movie art posters in years. This one was created for Fandango by Estevan Silveira

Pocket Notes are where I practice paying attention. In this Pocket Note, I talk about the guy who was slurping nacho cheese off his fingers during Sinners. The movie audience as a congregation. A moment of mortification. A gift of grace. And how seeing Sinners in theaters is an experience you cannot and should not miss.

The Sinners soundtrack stands on its own.

Or maybe I should say it sings on its own. If you haven't gotten a chance to see the movie yet, take the time to listen to its music. Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler have collaborated on film scores since college. This profile of their working relationship is fascinating.

I was so personally delighted to see that Brittany Howard and Ludwig Göransson wrote (and performed!) Pale, Pale Moon together. Both artists are a huge presence in the soundtrack of my life.

I listen to Howard's Jaime all the way through at least once a month. I read a review of her music years ago that said something like she sings like someone who is obeying their soul. (I'll share the review when I find it. Google is failing me.) I can't think of a better way to put it myself. (With the HUGE caveat that I am definitely paraphrasing because if that was an exact quote, Google would help me find the source!)

Göransson's music gets a listen at least once every single time I write. So...pretty much every day. Göransson's music helps me hear the music, I guess is all I am saying.

Okay. Enough from me. Go see Sinners.
